OnSurviving Conversations & Resources

Building on the stories that Noblelee and Meagan share in the OnSurviving blog, we host a video podcast in which we feature:

  • Others' stories of survival, including discussions about what has been helpful along the way and dreams about what could be even better. In these conversations, we seek to support and inspire people struggling to survive, and we look for ideas that can help make systemic change in support of people with the impacts of trauma and other mental health challenges.

  • Discussions with change makers and system leaders on needed private and public system changes as well as resources and services that are available now.

Find full conversations and conversation clips, along with other video resources on our YouTube channel through the button below. Other resource links will be added in the section that follows.

Resources for Survivors

Resources that we find and/or that OnSurviving guests identify as helpful will be added to the list below on an on-going basis. Please note that not all resources are right for everyone. Make your own judgments on what is right for you. Contact us if you have any concerns about any items on the list or if you would like to see anything added.

Crisis Support

If you are in immediate risk or harm or are in danger of acting on suicidal thoughts, please call 9-1-1 in the United States (see Wikipedia list to find the number for emergency services outside the U.S.) or go to the nearest hospital emergency room. 24-hour crisis support is available for free from anywhere in the United States by calling 9-8-8. Many more resources are listed at www.speakingofsuicide.com/resources.

Be Prepared

If you are struggling with your mental health, impacts of trauma, addiction or other major life challenges, it could help to make a plan for how to manage these challenges on a daily basis as well as during and after times of crisis. The Wellness Recovery Action Plan is one tool that can help you be prepared for different situations.

You are
NOT Alone

There are many projects like OnSurviving that hope to decrease the stigma of struggling with our mental health conditions and to support those of us who are deep in the struggle. Share your story, feel less alone as you learn about others' stories, and discover helpful resources in support of your health and wellness at www.1n5.org.

Get Encouraged

We at OnSurviving are big fans of Anna Przybylski, who offers charming, fun, sweet, deeply human and on-point words of encouragement to folks who are struggling in life generally. You can find her videos on YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok.

Disability Rights

The National Disability Rights Network provides legal support and other services for people with disabilities, which includes debilitating mental health conditions.

Work Resources

Career One-Stop is a U.S.-wide resource where you can find an array of help from job searching to finding a career center near you that can help you with shifting to work that may work better for you.

State Vocational Rehabilitation Agencies help people with all types of disabilities access work that works better for them. They partner with employers to develop opportunities as a part of this mission.

System Change

We encourage survivors and supporters in the United States to share your stories with your political representatives, so they can make changes in the system that support us all better. Check out this website to find your U.S. elected representatives - federal, state, county, and local officials: https://myreps.datamade.us

Suicide Prevention Training

Everyone can help prevent more deaths by suicide. Any of us may come across someone in major emotional crisis in our families, work places, social groups, or anywhere in our communities, but it can feel scary to talk directly with folks in crisis if we aren't prepared. Let's all get prepared! The Suicide Prevention Resource Center created this list of trainings for people to act in a "gatekeeper" role, helping people at risk feel valued and supported and get connected with professional care. Explore the list to find the right one(s) for you.
